ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how supervision is defined and practised internationally, and explores how reader should go about being supervised and/or play the role of supervisor. It looks at the role of ethics in business coaching, and ethical codes that have been developed through professional bodies such as the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and Coaches and Mentors of South Africa. The chapter describes recommendations for key areas to consider when contracting with a client, a client organization and a supervisor. It discusses the context and guidelines for contracting, the importance of committing to an ethical code, and the rationale for coaching supervision. The importance of coaching supervision is to ensure that the coach understands what the client goes through, and more importantly, to work through their own issues so that they do not become entangled with client concerns.
