ABSTRACT

Sigmund Freud saw dreams as subconscious wishes that conscious mind just could not handle. He believed that all dreams have an underlying meaning and should be treated seriously. There have also been some cases where dreams have provided inspiration and solved problems. A famous example was the physicist Kekule, struggling to understand how carbon atoms form molecules in organic chemistry. One frequent theme is how dreams can represent the outgrowing and abandoning of the ethics, morality, and religion learnt in childhood. Throughout history, dreams have excited, befuddled, and inspired. Carl Jung believed that dreams present a subliminal awareness of the environment. There have been many theories about how dreams can predict illness. There are many stories about dreams foretelling the future. At age seven, the novelist Graham Greene dreamt of a shipwreck the night of the Titanic disaster, and had a number of other predictive dreams in his life.
