ABSTRACT

For many practitioners, there are burning questions that seem to preoccupy them about working with children. In this chapter, the author includes his responses to some of the commonly asked questions from workshop participants. Many participants' questions relate to convening and engaging children, such as organizing ground rules for the conduct of a session. However, other questions arise with some regularity, particularly those dealing with statutory cases, and the author addresses these in some detail in order to tackle the complexities involved in attempting to work collaboratively, even when practitioners are required to "take over" certain aspects of parental responsibilities. The questions typify the main concerns of practitioners in facing constraints in working directly with children. Overall, the questions point to the usefulness of systemically informed, reflexive practice that takes account of the possibilities and limitations in each of us depending on our agency, remit, and personal and professional experience.
