ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the concept of the "coaching way of being" in detail. The partnership principles have been developed by Dr Jim Knight, a leading researcher in the field of coaching. According to Knight, there are a number of partnership principles that should characterise every coaching conversation. Effective Ershad coaching may rely on the facilitator being able to adopt the partnership principles and start to embrace what authors are calling a "coaching way of being". Coaching is primarily an opportunity for quiet reflection, so the facilitator's role is to create a space and environment that is conducive to deep thinking, new ideas, and personal insights. Ershad coaching may include discussions about business or organisational interests. Facilitators must place ethics and integrity at the heart of their professional practice. By incorporating the three elements of effective coaching (skills, process, and a coaching way of being), the Ershad coaching framework can deliver the tangible benefits to learners.
