ABSTRACT

When our young candidates first arrive, they seem to think of themselves as a sort of sorcerer’s apprentices. They feel a little lost and even frightened, and so they try to put on a brave face. In order to handle the vaguely persecutory fantasies that are tormenting them, they appear to be saying to themselves—and to us—‘Come on, we are not children!’ And so initially they work with us in a rather rigid and cautious way.
