ABSTRACT

As might be expected in a computer-driven age, counselling can now be accessed on self-help courses through the Internet. The modality presently best suited for this is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as it is a relatively structured approach. As such, it could be construed as being less dependent on a personal relationship with a counsellor. An approach to online support is through peer group befriending and mentoring. For this there is a website called Horsesmouth, set up on the basis that untapped wisdom is wasted. Horsesmouth invites those with the relevant knowledge and skills to offer the benefit of their experiences as mentors. For those accessing the website, there is the opportunity to seek guidance on a wide range of topics from general health and well being, through relationships and family matters, to choosing a career and managing problems at work.
