ABSTRACT

Among the many theories claiming to explain the unexpected victory of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential campaign, one stood out for the support it received from the voters themselves: the presence of a widespread "thirst for change". What Trump's followers found attractive in their candidate was his strength, his grit, and his recognition of the need for change rather than the specific changes he proposed to make. So, it did not bother them that those changes were ill defined. Several closely related emotional states develop in response to the situation: fear, anger, envy, and the feeling of bottomless neediness originating in a state where a vital emotional need is never met. These are, as it turns out, the signature emotional states people associate with the Trump campaign: fear, envy, destructiveness, and greed. In the fantasy world, however, the struggle against the dark side is never ending.
