ABSTRACT

Available for everyone, dreams are the endogenous medicine of the unconscious. The psyche produces its own healing serum, but it needs to be carefully extracted and gradually assimilated in titrated doses, each carrying waves of memory and emotions. Dreams possess the ability to cast a shimmering veneer of mystery and significance over the visible and the mundane. Dream symbols represent people's current emotional state and also the possibility of renewal through discovery of previously unrecognized capacities. The author thinks of dreams as a form of what philosopher Edward de Bono calls "provocative operation". He popularized the idea of lateral thinking, a process of changing perceptions and concepts. He describes what he calls the provocative operation, which involves the forward use of an idea that performs a provocative rather than descriptive role. Dreamwork proves its value to the extent that it motivates people to concretize ideals in waking life.
