ABSTRACT

The repudiation of femininity is the refusal to follow that deadly seductress in the inexorable logic of the pleasure principle. The analyst's ego acquires the ability to tolerate some degree of distortion without falling to pieces; that ability can be kept in operation during a sufficient length of time to enable adaptation to transference demands, particularly those in the primary dimension. Neutrality enables the analyst's psyche to act as a mediator that, for the time being, puts on hold the enslavement of quantity8 and its consequences in order to find or to find again the road to what Winnicott called primary creativity. Biology, the bedrock of resistance and the frontier of psychoanalysis, lay always on the horizon of Freud's thinking—indeed, he often presented it as being the future of psychoanalysis. At the end of his paper "Analysis terminable and interminable", Freud writes, "The repudiation of femininity can be nothing else than a biological fact".
