ABSTRACT
Every human infant is born dependent on the care of its parents. The power exerted by parents over children is virtually absolute and the detection of even severe abuse is difficult. Just as it is difficult to establish the veridicality of memory, so it is difficult to know the degree of abuse that any given child has suffered. Some degree of abuse may well enter into every parent–child interaction.
