ABSTRACT

Contemporary existential-humanistic psychology represents a variety of different psychological perspectives from, obviously, existential and humanistic, but also psychoanalytic, Jungian, phenomenological, embodied movement, community, multicultural, developmental, etc. Intersubjective transactions take place between mind and body, suggesting a connection between the domain of psychological and somatic arenas. Positive psychology's presumptions of the Aristotelian approach to human nature and development, as explained by MacIntyre, include the idea of distinguishing between how human beings happen to be and how human beings are—as they realize their essential nature. Consequently, this approach is at odds with the widely disseminated medical model that emphasizes failure, fault, illness, and classification of mental disorders. Recovery Innovations is a shining example of a post-medical-model, recovery- and growth-oriented organization aiding people in profound mental distress. There are other organizations such as MindFreedom International, The Icarus Project, and PsychRights that, in their own ways, also participate in and support the recovery movement.
