ABSTRACT

In the model of mind which has been adopted by mature religions, individual has freedom of choice, ultimately between the good and the bad. Science is an attitude of mind which seeks to verify beliefs. There is an oscillation between observation of phenomena and beliefs. It is prepared to overthrow a belief and replace it with another should observation prove that belief is incorrect. In religion the data of experience are moulded to fit the patterning of belief; in science the hypothesis is altered to fit the data of experience. Psychoanalysis has been far more successful in uncovering the vices in the emotional sphere than any of the traditional religions. This is because it has adopted a scientific method of investigating this sphere and has developed it to levels of considerable sophistication. The psychoanalytic method is one which both uncovers the emotional currents, vicious and virtuous, in individual psyche and at the same time scientifically traces their origin and connections.
