ABSTRACT

Primitive religion began at that point when humans started to bury their dead and mature religion began with those great spiritual masters who arose in the Axial Era. The realization that the individual deserved to be honoured came about because a change had occurred that demanded it. There are two different modes of ensuring the individual's obeisance: instinct and religion. The burial of the dead was a sign of an inner change and realization. The burial of the dead was a religious act, an act of the group, and the recognition of the individual's intentionality. A religious model of man then is one which posits that man is an intentional creature. So the emergence of religion occurred in several distinct though connected events in the evolution of man. These various events were separated by a time lapse of some 60,000 to 100,000 years.
