The following week David resumed analysis, viewing his decision to stop treatment as no longer relevant. The beginning of this phase was characterized by David’s manic defences and euphoric demeanour, which enabled him to avoid pain. Thus, he was preoccupied with the important visitors who came to pay their condolences during the shiva, and he also kept himself busy with the special prayers recited three times a day during the period of mourning.
