ABSTRACT

Recent years have seen the publication of a number of papers approving the decision of a therapist to touch his patient and in some of them there is a virtual recommendation of the usefulness of this practice. Of course, since the early days of psychoanalysis practitioners have been strongly urged to keep a physical distance from their patients: contact is to be established exclusively by the use of words. An apparently unrelated issue is the number of weekly sessions a patient should have. I believe there is a link between these two topics and this is why I have brought them together here.
