ABSTRACT

In author's experience, the history of patients with neurotic contained the information that certain nervous conditions had developed on a certain day of the week, and had then regularly recurred. Most of them experienced these periodical returns of the disturbances on Sundays. They were mostly headaches or stomach disturbances that appeared on this day without any particular cause, and often utterly spoilt the young people’s one free day of the week. Many things indicate that physiological factors do not exhaust the facts of the case. The headache, for instance, occurred also when the duration of sleep on Sunday did not differ from that on the other days of the week, and the stomach troubles appeared when the environment and the patients themselves were forewarned. According to Freud, the inner powers that direct our thinking and acting in logically, ethically, and aesthetically unobjectionable ways only reproduce instinctively what was once forced upon mankind by external necessity.
