ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about grief, in response to the statement made by so many who came to the counselling/therapy room suffering from grief but thinking that they were going mad. The chapter refers to men and women in their thirties, forties, and fifties. The chapter takes it for granted that young children will be very affected, but often overlook the impact on the mature "child". As Brendon, in his late fifties, said when his mother died, "I miss her so much, what a gap there is, she was my best friend". Sometimes a new loss can become overwhelming and require the support of a professional because it has reopened an earlier loss, perhaps one that you took in your stride but that you had not fully come to terms with at the time. The chapter explains some of the symptoms of grief and some other commonly experienced reactions.
