ABSTRACT

There are several main negative emotions that people often have to work within these various emotional states, especially depression. The five "biggies" are: denial, guilt, shame, jealousy, and resentment. Anger is often seen as pretty negative as well, and this is dealt with separately in the section on "Anger management". This chapter explains some of the deeper emotional dynamics that people tend to contact, and try to deal with, during counselling and especially psychotherapy. However, they are not all negative, as working with these emotions can lead one towards new growth, and even transformation. Working through negative feelings is not easy. If people take the example of the negative emotion of jealousy, the jealous person needs to recognize, first of all, that their jealousy is a real problem, it is affecting their life, and then they need to work to change it.
