ABSTRACT

A therapy group has the advantage of being a small, insulated world in which present behaviour can be experienced and new behaviours tried out. The group provides an arena for those who have social difficulties to discover and work through whatever is blocking the natural process of connecting and relating well with others. A group of children in a special class for severely emotionally disturbed children were given old cafeteria trays on which were dabs of finger paint. The group basically is an ideal setting for children who need connection with other children. Some groups can be time-limited rather than ongoing, especially groups that are set up for children who have had similar experiences, as victims of child abuse or divorce. The content of the group varies, of course, according to the age range and the specific needs of the children.
