ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on human emotion and how it relates to the self, how children manifest anger and the difficulties these manifestations generate, the steps of the therapeutic process in working with anger and techniques for helping children express anger in healthy ways. Anger and the sense of self go hand in hand. Anger is an expression of the self, and the self is diminished when one inhibits anger. The suppression of emotions, particularly that of anger, is basically connected to her adoption of negative introjects. Most of the symptoms and behaviours that children evidence that may eventually bring them into therapy, directly relate to the suppression of anger. Even a very young child can learn to be direct with anger. Anger work is something like a spiral. As the child feels some self-support, inner strength, through activities to enhance and strengthen the senses, body and self, she can express an angry feeling.
