ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the impact on services of the client with dissociative identity disorder (DID). It is based on the experience in a small northern town, with services and staff trying to make sense of a person they can't make sense of. The possibility of organised criminal ritual abuse does not come easily to mind and, even when it is considered, there is a reluctance to believe that it could be present. People with DID often have physical disabilities as a result of the abuse they have endured and may, then, receive support as a disabled person. Sometimes individuals with DID are seen as being possessed by demons and this can arouse the interest of different churches. Many people with DID, according to their reports, have been abused within their family and breaking away is an essential part of their survival.
