ABSTRACT

A feature of long-term holistic therapy is that when, for whatever reason, a therapist leaves, Amara Care has to find a new therapist. The author began working with Carly and her system nearly a year before her previous therapist was due to retire. They had already met a few times within the local client community. Carly has an incredibly warm heart and a desire to help others. It was clear that she had a number of apprehensions about the author's skills working with dissociative identity disorder (DID) but encouraged their relationship by providing literature relating to DID and, more bravely, information that related to the system personally. As time progresses, more alters within the system are feeling safe enough to come and talk with the author. Carly and her system have the challenge of living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD. In DID there are numbers of alters all at different stages of recovery.
