ABSTRACT

The Philomathean Society, founded in 1813, may be the oldest literary society in the US and the oldest student group at Penn. Dreams became a holy grail, with Erich Fromm's The Forgotten Language another point of entry. There are many gradations of light experiences, spectrums from small inner flames to the great light without location. Some version of light might or might not appear in sessions. There are so many therapy schools and approaches that help people. Much therapy goes on in the dark but once light is experienced it's like a compass or orienting point from which faith arises, a sense of faith hard to undo. Neuropsychology/biology is used as an explanation for thought, disease, chemical imbalances, and support of widespread use of medication. Therapy has broadened to the point where people can talk about just about anything and everything—on either side, therapist or patient.
