ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the capacities and skills needed for the work are intended to show those that nearly all practitioners would agree on. It shows the conceptual research, which capacities and skills are cited in the literature as being of relevance for working as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. The book introduces the empirical research and details how the categories were derived. It draws together the findings, mapping to see in what way the capacities and skills matched and whether the interviews showed evidence of the participants having greater access to areas that would be seen as being of importance. The book highlights the meaning and significance of the findings and some of the conclusions, also pointing out some aspects of research methodology that might be questioned and drawing attention to areas that merit further research.
