ABSTRACT

The experience and consequences of early relational trauma are powerfully amplified due to the fact that in avoiding the truly unbearable experience of the trauma that is at the core of their being, the individual is also alienated from the core of their self. Trauma becomes soul-murder. Jung and Freud were both right, and that the highly charged affect is a significant factor, as expressed in the power of the affects that disrupt the individual somatically, emotionally, and cognitively, as well as the moral charge and woundedness that binds the individual to the traumatic experience. As the individuals ego- functioning develops they are able to focus on "more important things" in their lives and get over new woundings more easily due to a different focus. The analyst's task in orienting the individual towards facing their traumatic experiences and accompanying them on their journey, and by their involvement themselves becoming part of that journey, is invaluable.
