Karl Abraham was born on 3 May 1877, in extremely unsettled times. The political structure of his fatherland, Germany, changed so much in the second half of the nineteenth century that relationships between the most powerful nations in Europe were radically altered. After the revolutions of 1848-1849, a federal system had been introduced so that independent German states continued to exist but a central government took charge of important matters like the postal service, defence, foreign affairs, and the currency. Bremen is but a shadow of what it once was, one of the most powerful and wealthy cities of what is northern Germany. From 1850 onwards, German economic growth was spectacular. In the first two years of the German empire's existence, from 1871 to 1873, the economy overheated and share prices rose inexorably. The consequences of the crash of 1873 were devastating and it would be another twenty years before the economy recovered.
