ABSTRACT

The idea of holding a psychoanalytic meeting originated with Fulop Stein and Sandor Ferenczi from Budapest. Only in retrospect would it come to be known as the first psychoanalytic congress. Karl Abraham is attempting to give an initial boost to the development of psychoanalytic theory on dementia praecox, which he is keen to distinguish from hysteria. Abraham had done nothing, yet he was being asked to lay the conflict with Jung aside for the sake of the cause, a conflict in which Sigmund Freud completely disregarded his own role. On 22 January 1908, Carl Jung wrote to Freud that he wanted to do his best to prepare a talk for Salzburg about dementia praecox, perhaps in co-operation with Riklin. On 3 March 1908, Jung sent Freud a letter that included the draft programme for Salzburg, and, on 5 March, Freud wrote back that he had noticed that Riklin and Abraham were missing from it.
