ABSTRACT

Parthenope Bion Talamo was born in India in 1897, and to celebrate his centenary, the conference is being held next year, in Turin. Bion refused to end the treatment of his patients, and the British Society reached a very English compromise: the record of the meeting of the training committee shows that they decided to consider Bion a Candidate in training. For Bion, an individual with an internal group can never disregard the external group in which he finds himself: that is, what the individual is capable of doing or saying or thinking depends to a great extent on the wellbeing of the group. Training in an unusual manner, because at the time he was director of the Tavistock Clinic and had patients in treatment, and this was was not acceptable for a Candidate of the British Psychoanalytical Society.
