ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of seventeen-year-old Stanley. He was referred for counselling by his medical doctor who had already prescribed antidepressants for Stanley. In addition, a local psychologist had diagnosed Stanley as suffering from major depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The focus of the therapy session has shifted from “Stanley the depressed adolescent” to “Stanley the Renaissance man”. By pursuing the life of a “Renaissance man” Stanley will have to do more things he enjoys and interact with more people who have similar interests. Playing rugby is a physical activity that Stanley has not up to now been engaging in as he lies in his bed feeling depressed. Playing rugby also entails interacting with other team members. Stressing how rugby is a unique sport is a way to activate a resource of a feeling of significance in Stanley.
