ABSTRACT

The sexual act takes place easily with the accustomed partner, but in the case of the new and greatly desired object performance is meagre and satisfaction unattainable. Every age has its own psychological problems which it must be able to tackle. The decline in physical powers means a diminution in self-esteem and self-love. Such a strain, however, rarely entails greater evils. Normally, sexual power and sexual desire decrease at about the same rate. The ageing man becomes, as it were, sexually dependent on one particular woman with whom he is sexually potent, and the woman on the man who is able to give her pleasure. The type has been caricatured on innumerable occasions, but men have to recognise that in some cases he has a real value in fostering art. Mental deterioration is an entirely different phenomenon. Normally, sexual power and sexual desire decrease at about the same rate.
