ABSTRACT

The movement towards individual, internal freedom is an attitude, which hopefully leads to free choices in life, rather than perpetuating models of psychological slavery, pathology, deprivation, and abuse. In an article in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis on human freedom and its transmission, The families of small children with sleep problems usually come to clinics with great urgency. The parents, having sought advice from various sources, reach a point at which they almost explode with exasperation as Dilys Daws, child psychotherapist, shows so poignantly in her book Through the Night. Sometimes, when a child is referred for a specific problem in the area of sleeping, feeding or phobias, the symptom is so charged with meaning that it becomes impossible to explore other areas of the development of that child and of the family relationships.
