ABSTRACT

In Maria Emilia Pozzi's working experience in Child and Family Consultation Clinics, she has not come across many under fives referred for issues of gender identity. She has encountered the problem in male twins, referred because the parents had noticed and were worried about one of the twins showing excessive feminine traits and interests. Being a twin constitutes a situation of risk and vulnerability. What is meant for one baby has to be shared by two babies from the very beginning of life in the womb. She considers the issue of gender identity in a twin boy, who was four years old when he was referred to the clinic. The presenting problem was that Ron had played with dolls since early life and had shown an attraction for feminine clothes, which he himself wanted to wear. The whole family was invited and attended the first session, following which four more sessions were offered, but only the parents came.
