ABSTRACT

The concept of mental health contains elements that are as much universal and established as they are culture-specific. It is a 'concept in motion' and multi-determined. The expression 'in motion' suggests a certain relativity since the concept of health is modified according to the historical period, customs, prejudices and ideals. The healthy area of a neurotic person or one suffering from a serious pathology can increase its potential to influence the whole of the psyche by means of adequate stimulation. This undamaged area works like a natural neutralizer of the pathogenic totality. Enjoyment of destruction and pain occupy very small psychic areas in a healthy individual, who is able to overcome resentments with ease and without adherence to feelings of hate. They neither get easily offended nor continually dwell on sad experiences. Libidinal viscosity is linked to the recollection and repetition of joyful experiences.
