ABSTRACT

I am the eldest daughter of a family of six children—three boys and three girls. Our father did not want all of us to go to the same school so we were sent to different boarding schools in pairs—my elder brothers, Sam and MacDonald, went to St Philips, Chipuriro, and later to a boys’ missionary school, St Ignatius, in Chishawasha, just outside Harare; my youngest brother, Obediah and I went to Chishawasha Mission, and later I went to a girls’ missionary school, St. Dominic’s in Chishawasha and Obbie went to Makumbe Mission and later to Daramombe Mission; my sisters Louisa and Tee went to Waddilove, Kwenda Mission, Makumbe Mission and St Francis of Assisi in Chivhu. Although we were separated during school terms we all kept each other in mind by sharing the same transitional object—Otis Redding’s music. Listening to Otis Redding comforted us and kept us together when we were apart.
