ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with some of the less public facts of human nature as expressed in the workplace. People work well in organisations where there is some degree of alignment between what they value and are committed to, what they will work to achieve, and the values and commitments of the organisation. The workplace is a setting in which the private world of emotions and meaning and the public world of fact and achievement come together. The Welfare State has been less than effective in helping with the inevitable emotional consequences of unemployment. The need to be able to adapt effectively to a changing world requires a capacity for working in teams. However, the excessive use of control as a method of management results in either denial and bullying or in a succession of management fads that promise 'the one best way' of motivating and organising the work-force.
