ABSTRACT

A person who is a member of one of the known religions is religious. This membership can be either explicit or implicit. In the case of the former the individual participates in the rites and devotional life of the religion in an identifiable way. The good was an internal possession, the light of which they followed, and they were thus able to abandon the religion of the culture in which they had been brought up. The way the good is conceptualized differs in primitive religion and mature religion. In primitive religion the good is conceived to be the physical survival of the individual and the tribe; in mature religion it is the salvation of the individual members through meaning. In traditional religion the spiritual person detaches himself from sexual and erotic ties. This is the foundation stone from which he begins his spiritual work.
