ABSTRACT

In this couples’ group session, the therapists are working with the group members by listening to their utterances (what is said) and questioning the saying (the enunciation). As the session progresses, it is becoming clear that for one member of the group, Andrew, who is suffering from trauma, the ability to use the symbolic is presently reduced. The work in the group is overwhelming him with aspects from the imaginary and the real. For Gina, his wife, on the other hand, as difficult and intense as the sessions have been, she is able to use them; she can utilise the symbolic in a way that her husband is finding increasingly impossible.
