ABSTRACT

Sarah is the second child of Mrs. L., an Hispanic mother, who was referred to our child guidance clinic by her pediatrician. A quiet little girl, rather immature-looking for seven months, she sat on the floor somewhat unsteadily in front of her mother. She played in a monotonous way with two toys she was given. She banged one endlessly, mouthed it, but without any real interest. As she dropped it, she picked up another to repeat her disinterested banging and mouthing, as if she were just killing time, waiting for something else to happen. She showed a minimum of interest in either of these toys. She never explored them, nor did she look around at us to see whether we were watching her. She seemed almost in a world of her own, without interest or excitement.
