ABSTRACT
In the centre of the legends, the following figures stand out: Le Morte D’Arthur, his knights, Guinevere, Lancelot, the sacred chalice, Perceval, and the great druid magician Merlin. The wise old man has remained as the key link in the whole cycle as the bewitching guide and master of initiation rites. Arthur’s knights, through the wise old man, understand that the field of human action is no longer the war of conquests, but the great adventure in search of one’s own soul. Merlin prepared kingdoms and kings, forged Uther and his love for Igraine, conceived Arthur as an idea, an ideal, created the round table, and introduced the order of the knights. Merlin and Arthur make up the coniunctio between knowing and doing. Therefore, Arthur-Merlin appears as the hero of the new epoch, as someone who determines his own destiny through his individual choice.
