ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. The transformation from Standstill to Increase, which is the dynamic illustrated by I, is not a one-way gift; Heaven, The Creative, and Earth, The Receptive, give and receive. This hexagram represents a development of Pi / Standstill. The resolution pictured in the present hexagram shows us that there has been an exchange: Heaven has given a firm line to Earth and received a yielding line from Earth, thus creating the dynamic and fruitful engagement of Chen, the Arousing, the initiating, and Sun, the Gentle, the Penetrating. This is a pragmatic hexagram: giving and receiving are chosen not for altruistic reasons or out of simple goodness of heart, but rather because that is what works. When one knows what works the choice is easy.
