ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. The tree is exposed in a position and, if it is to survive, it will need to adapt to the extreme conditions that prevail. The growth of such a tree may be stunted in comparison with what might be possible in a more benign position, but it could outlive the tree that grows without hardship. Trees that grow in isolated places often become landmarks, their characteristic shape or outline on a hill being recognizable from afar and serving as a point of orientation in the landscape. There are times when growth is bound to be slow because people are more exposed and vulnerable than usual. Such times require considerable courage, as others may not recognize or understand the reasons behind the choices people need to make as they adapt and put down roots into the dark earth.
