ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explores the processes of change and balance as reflected in the hexagrams for the contemporary reader. The wanderer is a solitary person who is disinclined to put down roots and get established in a community or in a role. The Wanderer inside each of people is the other who does not respond to the same calls as they do, or as they have learnt to do. People can learn something from the attitude of the Wanderer; they can learn to value their time and not take it for granted. Li, the flame, emphasizes the message: let one’s light burn with brilliance, but also be clear-sighted and recognize that life is brief. While the central idea of the hexagram may be to 'lighten up', to move on, to release whatever is weighing people down, to explore, learn new ways, get new views, there is another way of looking at it.
