ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the story of Jennifer because of a drawing she made that helped her to recognise and understand her nightmares. The initial assessment interview with the girl and her mother brought to light an extremely complex family structure and a multiplicity of conflicts. The adolescent girl who had taken the overdose did improve and managed to resume her school life. Jennifer arranged a little corner where she could sit comfortably and use a stool as a working surface, so that she could play with some toys and also draw. The family discussion had focused on the usual topics but the arrival of the family member produced a series of passionate protests and critical comments that must have been difficult for Jennifer to make sense of. Jennifer sustained her friendly, somewhat sceptical smile, said nothing and then turned round to get more paper and returned to her corner, clearly wanting to continue drawing.
