ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about a brief story that shows very clearly how sensitive a child Gloria is to her parents’ anxieties. She had gone to a summer camp organised by her school and the very next day, claiming that a colleague had been “horrible” to her, she panicked and demanded that the teachers called her parents to take her home. The parents did go and brought her back, and she did feel safer and more protected when in their company. But when Gloria was born, she was considered dangerously underweight and immediate investigations were started. Mrs G mentioned specifically the placenta being sent to a specialised hospital to check for abnormalities. Whenever recounting something related to present-day events, each time she referred to her daughter, Mrs G would add “she is an only child”.
