ABSTRACT

In Television, Lacan uses the expression “grimaces of the real”. The statement “grimaces of the real” indicates a snub to the Other; the snub that is required of the subject and which confronts it with its impotence. This shows that desire is a defence in relation to the real, the real that thumbs its nose at the subject by manifesting in repetition. The grimaces of the real indicate that the subject has been caught. While he believes himself to be master of himself, a sign coming from the real shows him that he is divided. The expression “grimace of the real” is consistent with the logic adopted by Lacan in relation to repetition, that is, the impact of jouissance. It is important to stress that for Lacan repetition introduces something new. It is a crucial paradox that is nevertheless clarified by the idea that repetition introduces an essential, foundational dimension.
