ABSTRACT

Self esteem is the value that the child has of himself, how well or badly he regards himself. Both the sense of identity and the sense of inner confidence which is part of self esteem are closely intertwined with relationships, with the attitudes of important others around, and with the child’s sense of his growing body. A rigid style can lead to feelings of being over-controlled, and can make the child feel that his parents do not trust his abilities, which can then lead to doubts and lowering of his self-esteem. Children are finding a place in their family, comparing themselves with family members. Children of this age are becoming increasingly aware of their bodies and their gender identity. The desire to be a girl or boy, that is, the opposite gender, may appear in drawings and in fantasy play, and is quite common at this age.
