ABSTRACT

Luggage has inevitably featured very strongly in the personal development (PD) group journey. The group members have attached themselves to the group in different ways that reflect the patterns that they bring with them in their luggage. Anyone working in a therapeutic relationship with others, where attachment and separation are always critical issues, needs to understand something of their own pattern. The group experience can be very helpful, not only as a space in which to reflect upon the issue but as a lived experience of attachment. Some courses build in a form of evaluation. Development is indicated by the subtle differences in perspectives and understandings, and by the way in which the group conduct the conversation. The ending of the PD group provides an opportunity for every member to recognize and understand more of her or his own process of engagement and detachment.
