ABSTRACT

The group meeting will vary widely according to the particular course, students and facilitator. For most students, however, there is a common theme, and that is anxiety. In real life, experienced facilitators are one dimensional, and have developed their own style, integrating elements of various models. In one example, the facilitator works hard to bring everyone into the group, suggests what the group might do, and is friendly and self-disclosing. The boundary between personal development (PD) group and the course in general is another area that raises concerns about confidentiality, unless some very clear guidelines have already been set down. The role played by the PD group in assessing a student’s suitability to become a counsellor or therapist may be clear before the group begins. Every group has a physical environment that is set in a wider context. In any group, there is a network of connections that hold members together.
