ABSTRACT

The sense of immobility is a recurring sensation in groups, and with time can be understood as a prelude to change; a necessary gathering of energy in order to unfurl a sail, perhaps, or an indication of some resistance to travelling further that needs understanding in the group. This chapter looks at some of those elements that might be making movement difficult. Groups provoke powerful emotions and for that reason can be feared. The other side of fear is anger. Ambivalence, reluctance, and resistance can begin to be part of the group conversation rather than entangling the boat beneath the water and disabling it. Sometimes what is revealed goes beyond resentment and ambivalence to touch on other areas of personal significance. Recognising the other in oneself is such an important part of personal development. Some clinical psychology trainings, for example, clearly emphasize knowledge, skills and expertise, whilst others encourage the development of the “self-reflexive practitioner”.
