ABSTRACT

In physical bodies there is gravity that has within each body a magnetic attraction, that makes one body be in relation to another. Between human beings there is a human-level equivalent of gravity. With regard to human beings there is a different set of principles that govern the individual qualities. If the analyst’s or psychotherapist’s psychological place is in the sphere of this principle then from this viewpoint, which is either deeper or higher than psychological models proper, all of them can be encompassed. Sigmund Freud says, do the action if it leads to pleasure or avoids pain, but the act of generosity which may bring pain is then being praised for it goes counter to the hedonistic principle. The difference between Freud’s “avoidance” and John Macmurray’s “value” is that the natural instinct is to avoid pain and enjoy pleasure.
